Take Me to the Moon

2/2/2012

Today we blasted off to visit Earth's little pal, the moon. We talked about the phases of the moon, the moon's surface, and its orbit around the Earth. Then our mini astronauts put on their space helmets and prepped in the home base before going on an expedition to the moon! To make the moon's surface in our classroom we used pillows, cushions, and bins on the ground covered with white sheets. Then we added foam and cardboard moon rocks. There was a station for examining moon rocks, playing with moon sand, and viewing our surroundings with a kaleidoscope.

Look up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... ALIENS!!! Today we took a break from scientific fact for a little bit of science fiction! Starting off the day with the short story Buzz Beaker and the Outer Space Trip, by Carl Meister, we used our imaginations to create our own aliens and Alien worlds. Using clay and googly eyes, we sculpted our own galactic aliens. Later in the week, we will make them come alive even more with a bit of paint.

We also discussed what we thought an alien world might look like, and used watercolor paints to depict what we saw in our minds.

In the afternoon, we had visitors from outer space!! Aliens beamed down special notes for each of our friends to the picnic table in the backyard. We received these messages, but had to figure out how we could read them... a little bit of water color paint helped us uncover the secret messages.

For math, we counted aliens and matched them to their shadow.

Pretending to be aliens was another fun thing we did today. We danced to "alien music" and practiced our space walk! Since it was so nice outside, we also practiced our moonwalk on a walk around the neighborhood. It was an extraterrestrial day!

When I was your age, Pluto was a planet!

Today we talked about the EIGHT planets in our solar system! After creating our own awesome space helmets, we went on an outer space journey, where we used our sense of touch to feel what other planets are made of. Ask them what Jupiter is made of! We learned a lot about our solar system by reading the book Planets by Jennifer Dussling. Afterwards, we reviewed what the planets look like, and why there is no life that we know of on any of them.

For our math activity, we colored and numbered pictures of the planets in our solar system, and glued them in order away from the sun. We also brainstormed more words that we could add to our space word wall; the students came up with more excellent words. All they need now are space suits and they will be ready to travel the solar system!

Seeing Stars

Today we started our Space week with a focus on stars. We began by reading There's No Place Like Space: All About Our Solar System by Tish Rabe. Then we brainstormed a list of space words for our word wall. The kids told us the word that they wanted to write and we spelled it for them. They were all able to recognize and write the letters all on their own!

We also learned about telescopes and constellations before making our own telescopes out of cardboard tubes and black tissue paper. If you've never visited U of M's Museum of Natural History, it would be a great family field trip to take,  especially to check out their planetarium! Click here for a schedule of their hours.

We made galaxies in a can by putting black paper inside of a coffee can with marbles covered in white paint. Then, we used toothbrushes to spray stars on black paper and added planets with bright colors and sponges. Check out our space paintings to the left!

We can't wait to blast off into the rest of the week!!
