Wednesday we used Eric Carle's beloved book The Very Hungry Caterpillar to practice counting and adding skills. First we counted what fruit the caterpillar ate each day while reading the story, then we counted out blocks (unifix cubes) to represent the fruits. Students ended up with one "apple" (red block), two "pears" (green blocks), three "pears" (purple blocks), etc. Then we did some addition to figure out how many fruits the caterpillar ate in total. Everyone did a really great job! Afterwards, we enjoyed some freetime with the unifix cubes, and we heard a lot of great counting going on!
