Frogs n' Eggs

4/10/2012

We wrapped up our unit on frogs today and then learned a little more about eggs. We read the story A Frog in the Bog by Jean Rankin and practiced recalling the beginning, middle and end of a story- students were super story experts yet again!

During centers, students explored hopping like a frog, eating like a frog, and feeling what it would be like living in a frog habitat. We also had a math center where students focused specifically on writing/identifying numbers 1-10.

During the afternoon we read In the Nest and talked more about what kinds of animals come from eggs. Then we practiced being scientists and made some hypotheses during inter-eggs-ting eggs-periments. Click here to learn how to do the experiments at home!

The Easter Bunny visited Kozy Heart today! Our preschoolers and toddlers made some eggstra special "Easter baskets" and were treated to a fun egg hunt in the backyard.

In the morning during our literacy lesson, we reviewed the three parts of a story: beginning, middle and end. We then read Max's Chocolate Chicken by Rosemary Wells, and drew pictures to show the parts of the story.
During stations, we did some fun Easter crafts- Easter cards with stamps, textured painting easter pictures, and egg carton bunnies. The egg carton bunnies were a big hit!

We hope you all have an eggciting three day weekend, and a nice holiday if you celebrate Easter. See you on Monday!

An Eggciting Day!

The rain couldn't keep our cel-egg-bration down today in the Kozy Heart preschool room! We started the morning with our circle time and read The Easter Egg, by Jan Brett. The story is about Hoppi the rabbit, who helps a bird in need by keeping her egg warm until it hatches. We then made our own hatching easter eggs, and even practiced keeping them warm!

We also finished our napkin egg science experiments from yesterday. The way the colors bled together looks awesome!

Today we also opened the Kozy Heart beauty salon! It was time to give our friends the Grassheads a nice trim. Check out the students' handiwork... there were some very edgy 'dos!

In the afternoon we completed our Easter-themed math and science centers!
Picture
We loved using pattern blocks to make fun Easter shapes like the Easter Bunny and Easter baskets!
Picture
We tested our memory by playing Easter Egg concentration! There were 24 cards and it was hard to remember where the matches were!
Picture
At this station we practiced number recognition by rolling a nine-number dice and covering up that many bunnies on our worksheet. The older kids did a really nice job helping the younger kids with their numbers.
Picture
We practiced recognizing sentence structure with some simple, fun Easter sentences. Students arranged the sentences all on their own!

For science today, we made hypotheses about what objects were inside the yellow eggs. W shook the eggs and listened to the sound they made; then we made a guess about what it could be inside. At the end of the day, we checked to see if our hypotheses were correct... many people had a great ear for science!
