A Week in Review

This week we have been learning all about our senses! On Monday we learned about touch and talked about feeling the different textures in our classroom and even our hair. We read a book called I Love My Hair. We even got to use our sense of touch in a slimy (ivory soap and water) filled sensory bin. It was so fun!

ABC Centers this week:
  • Letter Tracing
  • Listening Center
  • Letter Sensory

Miss Nicole likes to save paper by putting our tracing sheets inside plastic sleeves and giving us dry erase markers!
On Tuesday we talked about our sense of sight and we read two non-fiction books about our eyes. We can name and touch our eyelids, eyelashes, and eyes. We even learned what a pupil does. For art we made binoculars and pretended to use them to see things up close.

In this center we have to put the right # of eyes on each monster! This helps with our number recognition and counting.
Math Centers this  week:
Pattern Block Templates
Pipe Cleaner # Count
Monster Eye Match

On Wednesday we used our noses and mouths to explore our sense of smell and taste. Did you know that you use your nose, mouth, and tongue to taste things? Did you know that you have tiny bumps on your tongue called taste buds and that they can taste 5 flavors? Ask us what 5 flavors we can taste. We tested out our sense of taste with a taste test. We got to taste lemons (sour), sugar (sweet), and salt. Bet you can guess which was our favorite!! Check out our Flickr page for a video of the tasting. To practice using our sense of smell we worked together to make homemade kool-aid play dough. Click here for the recipe.

Kool Aid play dough is great for our sense of smell and also for small motor skills, spatial skills, creativity, and use of tools.

Did we mention that we also celebrated National Talk Like a Pirate Day?? One family even brought in pirate cookies for everyone to enjoy! The kids and I had a great conversation while looking at the atlas about how long pirates were at sea for and the types of things pirates might eat and drink. Then we sang several renditions of the silly song, "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" from Veggie Tales. It was a great day!

On Thursday we used our sense of hearing and learned about the parts of our ear. We can name our outer ear, ear canal, and ear drum. For art we made jingle bell bracelets and guess what?? Everyone's bracelet made a different sound depending on how big or small their bells were and how many bells they used. During free play we decided to convert some kitchen dishes into instruments and pretended to be part of a big marching band!
Today (Friday) we spent the morning in Kindermusik and then outside enjoying the sun. This afternoon we are going to read a silly story and use our feet to make a painting! Look out for more pictures.
