On Friday we released our Butterfly friends into nature! They hung around in the container for a while after we opened it, I think they were sad to leave our preschool friends! It was fun watching them change from tiny little worms, to gorged out caterpillars, to chrysalis form, and finally emerge as butterflies! Here are some pictures of the release. See the Flickr group for more cute release pictures :)

Kid's choice week began with exploring the ocean and sea creatures. Today we read The Tide by Nik Pollard and talked about low and high tide. Two of our students just returned from a vacation on the east coast and brought back seashells for us to check out. We also read Goodnight Ocean and Under the Sea. We used our big atlas book to look at where the oceans are around our country. Some of us have been to visit the ocean! After talking about the kinds of animals that live underwater, we made pet lobsters! Miss Carey played us a silly "Rock Lobster" song while we worked.
This week we've been reading patriotic books and making all things red, white, and blue! Our preschoolers have been reciting the Pledge of Allegiance every day in front of our flag.
We're sorry for not updating as much as usual this week, we've been so busy having fun in the sun! Here's what you missed: On Tuesday we learned about Sunflowers and made our own classroom garden. We used our hand prints for the petals. We read Sunflower House by Eve Bunting and then we drew our own summer gardens in our journals. It was also the perfect day to give the patio toys a nice wash. We had tons of fun using sponges and soapy water to clean EVERYTHING in the yard! Thursday brought another team art project. We worked together to move balls covered in paint across our paper. It was hard trying to work together for this project! We had to use our words (which was a challenge in itself) to figure out how to move the pool. We had fun practicing teamwork and communication! Great news!! We collected enough cans to purchase a game for our classroom! We bought "Trouble" and we're so excited to play it with the kids! Thanks for all of your help so far! Our cans have purchased literacy journals and a game so far. Let's keep up the great work (and recycling)!!
Kool-Aid painting with kool-aid and ice cubes! No hands allowed!! Today we kicked off our Summer fun week with kool-aid painting! Each child had a piece of paper sprinkled with kool-aid. Then we gave them an ice cube and told them to move it around their paper without using hands! The result--a sticky, sweet masterpiece! We also read Curious George Goes to the Baseball Game and talked about our favorite summertime activities. Each week we have new literacy and math centers. Here's a peek at our math centers for this week: We have been learning about some really cool zoo animals this week in preparation for our field trip to the Toledo Zoo on Friday! Tuesday and Wednesday we learned about Buffaloes and Seals. Tuesday we read Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten? by Audrey Vernick and watched a youtube video about Native American cave paintings (where buffaloes were sometimes featured!). Then we made our own cave paintings! Wednesday we read the non-fiction book Beautiful Zoo Animals and learned some general facts about many different kinds of animals. For our craft we made Harp Seal pups out of a sock and some stuffing. The students loved building homes for their baby seals! In the morning we also went on a long walk around the neighborhood. Check our flickr group for a cute picture!
